If forest fairies exist in this world, they probably take after Tata Harper, queen of green skincare.

Now as any longtime reader doubtless knows, I wasn’t always preoccupied with green beauty. My love affair with all things all-natural is fairly new—very new, in fact. The first time I dared venture into this niche (years ago, at the drugstore), it didn’t go so well. In fact, after that unfortunate encounter, words like “all-natural” and “organic” sent me scrambling in the opposite direction. It wasn’t until a few months ago that I found out just how far the organic luxury market has come—and I’ve been hooked ever since. And as anyone who’s recently jumped on the bandwagon knows, Tata Harper’s line has (pardon the pun) bloomed since its debut—combining pure ingredients with the latest technology under one impossibly chic label.

Curious? I was too, so I recently caught up with the skincare expert herself to chat about her eponymous line and the push toward nontoxic beauty. From her stance on synthetics to her daily routine, get the scoop on Tata Harper’s all-natural world below:

Makeup Morsels: First things first! Why go all-natural?
Tata Harper: 100% natural skincare is better for you! The ingredients are totally pure and literally feed the skin with natural vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and antioxidants. They make the skin glow with a healthy radiance that you just don’t get with synthetics. Synthetic chemical ingredients come from laboratories and are derived from sources like petroleum and coal tar, as opposed to flowers—to me, it’s an easy choice. Plus, they really work. The idea that naturals don’t perform as well is a misconception; in recent years labs around the world have made incredible advances in discovering natural actives that work just as well, if not better than, synthetics, and our line features the latest and greatest in natural skincare technology.

Makeup Morsels: What does Tata Harper bring to the organic skincare market?
Tata Harper: Real, visible anti-aging results—delivered without a single drop of synthetic chemicals. Our products are super-concentrated cocktails of amazing ingredients that have been clinically proven to really work, while being luxurious and feeling wonderful to use—and they’re all handmade on our Organic Vermont farm. They’re really so different from anything else out there!

Makeup Morsels: What was the very first product you created?
Tata Harper: We actually made the entire line pretty much all at once. The whole formulation process took five years and a total of eight chemists who created the products from scratch. We didn’t buy pre-made bases like a lot of skincare companies often do. We started in on all of the products at once: cleansers, moisturizers, anti-aging products, a toner—and we released about ten products all at the same time.

Makeup Morsels: Tell us about your farm! What are some of the most potent active ingredients you grow for your line?
Tata Harper: We grow ingredients like borage, calendula, arnica, meadowsweet, lemonbalm, lavender, alfalfa—about fifteen in all. It’s a beautiful garden in the summertime, and we have a greenhouse where everything is processed and then brought to the laboratory.

Makeup Morsels: Can you share your everyday skincare routine with us?
Tata Harper: Of course! I use the Regenerating Cleanser on dry skin, which I like to do because I can really feel the exfoliating action and the enzymes, and then rinse with warm water. Then I spritz the Hydrating Floral Essence on my face and neck (a moisturizing toner with natural Hyaluronic Acid to deeply hydrate), and then I use my Elixir Vitae antiaging serum on my entire face and neck. Then my Repairative Moisturizer, followed by a thin layer of my Replenishing Nutrient Complex—a multivitamin oil serum that’s great for lasting moisture and glowy skin. It sounds like it would take forever, but it’s really just two minutes!

Makeup Morsels: If you had to pick one product for the first time Tata Harper shopper, what would it be?
Tata Harper: Of course it depends on what you’re looking for, but I always recommend our Rejuvenating Serum. It does a little bit of everything: it fights fine lines and wrinkles, promotes healthy collagen production and elasticity, and delivers results where it’s needed most—in the deepest layers of the skin. It’s been our most popular products for years, and for good reason—it works wonders.

  1. For whatever reason, my obsession with organic skincare hasn’t led me to any Tata Harper products – and I have no idea why! I usually like to try a little of everything from every brand (that goes for makeup too), but there’s something that’s keeping me away. What’s my problem, I ask you!?!

  2. The all natural skincare brands set off alarm bells (my purse ain’t liking it lol)! But they have to-die-for ingredient lists which will end up being kinder to our faces in the long run.

  3. I used to be all about organic skin care and make up until I not only researched but sat down with a chemist. Furthermore, lost interest in the natural beauty industry due to their scare mongering and selling you a mixture of oils in a fancy one ounce packaging for like 90 dollars. I ultimately stuck with Shea Butter and black soap. I don’t mind expensive products and even dig a lot of expensive brands but the way a lot of natural products are marketed is such a turn off. I ultimately mix my own oils and create a clay shampoo for my hair.

    • So cool that you mix your own oils and make your own clay shampoo! I hear you on the scare-mongering, not a big fan of brands that just slap an organic label on their products and call it a day. But there are some organic brands I truly believe in because they deliver results. Suppose it’s ultimately what works for you!
