Tasty TGIF Tidbits: Truffle Salt

The first and only time I ever had truffles was during my internship in Taiwan.  I had gotten about 2-3 hours of sleep the night before, and was still working late into the evening.  I remember feeling extremely woozy at that particular dinner, while I chatted in Mandarin (it probably came out as nonsense) with my table-mates, and ate my way through a 7 or 8 course meal.

There was one dish that came out toward the middle, a plate of braised lettuce drowned in sauce, dotted with little black flecks.  I assumed they were bits of seaweed, but when I took my first bite, I was startled at an utterly addictive flavor I couldn’t place.  I ate the whole plate.  I would have licked it clean if I hadn’t been seated at a fancy dinner, surrounded by diplomats from various countries.  Following my last surreptitious plate scrape, I had the following conversation with my coworker (roughly translated from Mandarin, and probably not very accurate because I wasn’t 100% mentally present at the time).

Her: Do you like the song lu?

Me: (clueless)  *nodding and smiling emphatically*

Her: (goes back to eating)

Me: (after 5 minutes and an epiphanic moment) Oh, are these truffles?

Her: Yes…

That was two summers ago.  I haven’t had the opportunity to taste a truffle since.  Eventually, I realized that there is this wonderful thing called truffle salt, semi-within-my-budget.  So I shopped around.  I spent 20 minutes pacing in Williams Sonoma, ultimately unwilling to exchange $30 of my summer savings for a tiny jar of salt.  I toyed with Dean & Deluca’s offering.  Equally expensive.

Hope came to me in the form of mashed potatoes at a Thanksgiving family lunch.  My aunt told me they were white truffled mashed potatoes, and brought out a tiny jar of Hepp’s white truffle salt, which she told me cost $10.  My eyes slowly expanded to the size of saucers, and I began hyperventilating.  I drove out to a farmer’s market one day, and spent a good ten minutes inhaling Hepp’s white and black truffle salts.  I wanted to take both home with me, but spending $10 on one minuscule jar was bad enough.

Black truffle it was.  For those of you who have never smelled black truffle salt before, it’s…I’m not sure how to put this in words.  A tinge of gasoline, olives, complex saltiness, and musty dark rooms.  None of which sound very appealing, but somehow they form one of the most wonderful scents I’ve ever come across.

I’ve been very careful with my truffle salt so far.  It’s a finishing salt (as opposed to a cooking salt), so only a tiny bit is needed each time.  Once or twice a week, I’ll judiciously dip my little spoon into the salt jar, and top off a runny baked egg, or sprinkle a tiny bit on olive oil popcorn.  I’ve heard truffles are good with risotto, fries, and pasta as well, but that will come later on.  For now, I’m as happy as a hobbit with my little jar of joy.

Hepp’s Black Truffle Salt available online here.  They also carry White Truffle Salt at select farmer’s markets.

Tasty TGIF Tidbits: Orange You Glad I Didn’t Say Banana?

This Dark Chocolate Orange is one of Trader Joe’s holiday items, most of which seem to be on sale right now.  There’s also a milk chocolate version, but I prefer the less sweet dark chocolate.

To eat, simply take the whole thing, and smash it (gently) on the surface of your choice.  This breaks up the orange into 20 individual segments.  Think of it as $0.49 anger management.

I love the detail on the wedges.  The outside has a honeycomb pattern that I’m assuming is meant to look like orange peel.  It looks nothing like orange peel, but I appreciate the effort.  The wedges themselves look reasonably realistic, although one side is left completely smooth.  I’m assuming this helps the pieces break off evenly.

For $0.49, the quality is excellent.  It’s got a good snap, isn’t too sweet, and is shot through with an unmistakable citrus flavor.  Plus, I get a kick out of breaking the orange.  When I was in preschool, one of my classmates handed this to our teacher, and said, “You sit on it with your butt to break it.  Ha ha.”

Oh, the things my mind chooses to remember.

Tasty TGIF Tidbits: I Like Ice

But frozen fruit chunks are better.

I was’t planning on doing a Friday food post this week (pre-holiday crazies and all), but then I had a life-changing conversation about PEZ with Tracey and Xiao yesterday, and well, PEZ is food related, is it not?

Once again, I’m not really sure where I was going with that.  But at some point, I will have to printscreen that conversation, and show you.

I bought 2 glass tumblers from the 99 cents store, and I’m kind of obsessed.  According to my mom, when I was 5 and got a new cup, I would drink out of it all day long.

13 years later…not much has changed.

I’ve been sipping a lot of Martinelli’s Apple Cider over the holidays, and recently went into spasms (yes, spasms.  I think the combination of sleep debt and holiday jitters has made me slightly excitable) of delight when I discovered the combination of Trader Joe’s frozen mango chunks + Sparkling cider.  So, so delicious.  Beats ice cubes by a mile any day.

Tasty TGIF Tidbits: Chocolate

I’m no chocoholic, but it’s a nice yummy-in-my-tummy type thing every now and then.

I’ve always wondered, is there a big difference between mid-level priced chocolate and the high end stuff?  I wouldn’t know…when you have an addiction to makeup, your budget for other things decreases significantly :P

Milk and white chocolate are both too sweet for me, so I’ve always preferred dark chocolate.  And you?

Well, look at that.  I just wrote a whole post on chocolate.

Guess that means it’s Friday!

Do you have any fun weekend plans?

Tea for Two

(Except not for two, because I always end up drinking the everything myself.  Tea for one doesn’t have the same ring to it, unfortunately…)

I apologize for the lack of beauty-related posts this week.  Food/drink posts are just much quicker for me to put together, and I don’t have any pre-edited makeup review shots ready to go.  Luckily, I’ll have plenty of time to put some posts together this weekend.  In the meantime…

I try to reserve coffee for days when I have to be up by 6:10.  This happens 3 times a week.  The other 4 days, I stick to green tea.

This is the best one I’ve found so far.  Mind you, I’m no green tea coineusseur.  But I love the taste of this tea, it’s got absolutely no bitterness but a fairly strong taste with clean, slightly powdery notes.  I picked it up at the supermarket in Little Tokyo:

I usually brew tea with my coffee maker, so I don’t end up boiling an entire kettle of water for one cup:

And you?  Tea, coffee, neither?
