Arkenstone Inspired EOTD & Tutorial

lash stamps via obsidiandawn

It should come as no surprise that I documented the step-by-step for this EOTD.  It’s Tolkien-related.  It’s glorious.  Granted, I have no idea how many of you will actually try this, given that a) it’s neither office nor classroom-friendly and b) I’m 99% sure it’s not even eye safe, but one does not simply post an Arkenstone-inspired EOTD, and leave out the how-to.  Agreed?

Tart Warmers: An Overview & My Favorite Scent

I had originally planned a fragrance review for today, but somehow forgot how difficult they are to write.  Certain scents require long hours of sniffing and a lot of hyperbole.  I will try again another day.

For now, I think I’ll share my room’s signature scent (yes, my room has a signature scent when I do not) as well as a brief overview of tart warmers.

For those of you who have not yet fallen into the home fragrance trap, this is what a tart warmer, also known as an oil warmer/tart burner looks like:

You deposit your wax tart or home fragrance oil (usually diluted with water) into the little depression on top, light a tealight underneath, and enjoy the fragrance.  These are also great for leftover candle wax; just take your wax chips and put them where the oil or tart would go.

I’m not huge on gourmand candle fragrances, but Continue reading

My Secret Contouring Weapon: NYX Blush in Taupe

I hope those of you that celebrate Chinese New Year had a delicious dinner and quality family time yesterday.  And a wonderful new year, of course.  We did the whole red-envelope-under-pillow-only-eat-a-bite-of-the-fish-plus-red-underwear-and-a-billion-other-traditions-thing, and I baked blueberry muffins.  Because, you know, dragons like blueberry muffins and it’s the year of the dragon.

Switching gears to coherent beauty talk…

For the longest time, I thought I couldn’t get the hang of contouring.  Each time I’d try it, I wound up looking ridiculous.  Maybe I’ve smacked my head on too many walls, because it never occurred to me that it was the color and not the technique that was the issue.  I’m on the pale side (think N15), but started off with pigmented bronzers.  Picture the Pillsbury dough boy with orange marker drawn on his cheeks, jawline, and down his nose.  Do you see the problem here?

I purchased this NYX blush two years ago, declared it HG (holy grail) practically on the spot, and have been using it ever since.  Why then, has it taken me so long to review it?  Well mostly because when I bought it, I didn’t have my weird touch nothing until photographed obsession.  Instead of snapping a picture, I just went ahead and used it like a normal person.  And now it makes my soul hurt to post a picture of a blush that is clearly past the prime of its life.  But I will do it anyways: Continue reading

My Little World of Books

Yes, that is pixie dust.

When I was young(er), my parents used to say ‘no reading’ instead of ‘you’re grounded.’  And then they would hide my library books, and I would be miffed.  That is how much I love to read.

Knowing this, it might seem strange that I can count the books I’ve bought on one hand (though I suppose that depends if you count a book set as one book or not).  It’s a teeny-tiny collection, so I was wondering if any of you would be interested in seeing the books I love enough to have purchased.  Let me know below, this is a pretty simple yes/no deal!

What have you been up to this weekend?

Is Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturizer ‘The One?’

I have a history of being flighty with skincare products.  While I’ve used a lot of good skincare, it’s rare for me to love something so much that I’ll dub it HG (Holy Grail), and add it to my permanent routine.  After much searching, I’ve settled on my perfect cleansers, toner, and sunscreen (DHC Olive Oil Soap/DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, Kose Toner, andBioré Aqua Rich Watery Mousse Water Base).  However, the moisturizer slot has yet to be filled.

Today, I’m reviewing a product from British skincare brand Liz Earle, and it happens to be a moisturizer.  Will it achieve HG status, or will it be just another used-up container on my bathroom counter, unceremoniously tossed once its last dregs are emptied, never to be replaced?

(Sorry, I think I’ve been reading too much depressing LA literature lately)

To be concise (for once), Liz Earle’s Skin Repair Moisturizer for Dry/Sensitive Skin is practically Continue reading
