With Turkey Day officially behind us, it finally feels right to talk about the holidays in earnest. And while I have a habit of reverting to gold eyes and berry lips as November slips away, I’m doing things a bit differently this year.
Dolce & Gabbana‘s Emerald Holiday collection marks my first foray into 2013 winter beauty. It’s a small release, featuring a well-edited selection of repromotes—although I give them props for tying everything together so well.
Must-haves first: you have to check out the Intense Nail Lacquer in Emerald/Smeraldo ($24). I’m usually not one to favor high-end polishes over their drugstore counterparts, not unless we’re talking a truly stunning shade. But this color, can I just tell you about it? It’s not the glitter-flecked grass green I was expecting from the press images, nor is it the metallic green swirling about inside the bottle. Instead, what I get on my nails is a 2-coater color that instantly reminds me of the holidays. It goes from forest green to bluish emerald (reminiscent of Chanel Azure from their L’Ete Papillon launch) depending on the lighting, but it’s the finish that really gets me—a flat, fine shimmer that darkens beautifully at the edges. Think satin bows rippling over neatly wrapped presents and shiny ornaments hanging merrily on Christmas trees, think utter perfection. It is the only holiday green I want this year, and I can’t even imagine doctoring it up with glitter and rhinestones (which, as you all know, is my natural response to almost all one-color manicures). I love this. You need this. End of story.
On the other end of the wearability spectrum lies the Emerald Lipstick ($35), which is difficult to pull off unless you have the bone structure of a preternaturally gorgeous person (read: supermodel). I’ll give credit where credit’s due: it’s green alright. “SOOOO GREEN,” called my roommate—all the way from our kitchen—as I attempted to swipe it on casually in front of the closet mirror. I’ve given up on wearing it full-force (it tends to get streaky as you build up), so my preferred way to use this is to blend it with the most obnoxiously bright shades in my arsenal. Take note: the teeniest, tiniest bit is all you need to cool down the most vivid colors you own. Too much, and you’re headed for corpse lips territory.

That leaves us with the two eye makeup products in the collection: the Wild Green Intense Liquid Eyeliner ($34) and Laguna Eye Color Duo ($42). Both deliver the expected results, pigmented and smooth with just the right amount of shimmer. The eyeshadows blend out like butter and the compact is weighty and shiny and sleek—basically, everything you could every want in luxury packaging. You can wear these as the lightest veil of shimmer or smoke them out for a forest fairy-esque look, and I can personally attest to the fact that they make brown eyes glow. The shimmers didn’t read on camera as well as I would have hoped—isn’t that always the way it goes?—but I promise you they’re there.
I’ve always believed luxury makeup should make you swoon a little bit when you look at it. For that reason alone, I’d call this a successful holiday launch. You open up the compact, for example, and (if you’re anything like me) you just take a moment to bask in the beauty of it. The lipstick is more of a curiosity than anything else, but the eye products live up to their luxury price tags and the nail polish is simply a must. D&G can color me impressed this year.
What’s your favorite winter ’13 collection? Should I wear this green lipstick to the grocery store?
